IRS Alert
The IRS is reporting that their name and logo have been used in email scams to bait taxpayers into giving up personal financial information. The fraudsters have contacted members via email, telephone, and text messages with several different claims--"that a member is eligible for a greater refund if they file early, that they need to fill out a refund claim form via email/internet, that their returns will be audited and more financial information is needed, or that the IRS has mailed the member a check which has not been cashed and they need to verify financial account information. The IRS wants to emphasize that they do not ask for personal information through unsolicited email, phone call, or text message. If you are contacted in this manner, call the IRS at 800-829-1040 to determine if they are trying to reach you for any reason.
